Welcome to Treme

Treme is one of the oldest African American neighborhoods. It’s history dates back to the mid 19th century.  On Sundays African Americans congregated in Congo Square, which is now in Armstrong Park, to socialize and preserve their cultural traditions. The influence of the African American culture still remains strong to this day.  Treme exemplifies these traditions by holding several cultural events in museums, parks and community centers throughout the year. A few famous places in the area include Louis Armstrong Park, Congo Square, and Treme Backstreet Cultural Museum.
