The Garden District is one of New Orleans’s most charming neighborhoods. The Garden District we live in today was once part of a few large plantations. As more people moved to New Orleans in the 1800s to participate in the cotton industry, the plantation owners sold their land and it was developed into other smaller homes, outdoor parks, businesses, and streets. The homes in the Garden District were primarily constructed in one of four different architectural styles: Greek Revival, Gothic, Italianate, and Victorian. Many of these homes were built in the 1800s. The Garden District has beautiful interior design shops, high-end clothing boutiques, and incredible restaurants. One of the most famous restaurants in the Garden District is Commander’s Palace, which is over 120 years old.
