Parkway Tavern is a family-owned and operated restaurant located in Bayou St John. A German Baker, Charles Goering Sr., built Parkway in 1911 on Hagan Avenue in Mid-City. In 1922 Henry Timothy, Sr. purchased the bakery shop to continue running it as a neighborhood bakeshop selling donuts, pastries, and bread. Timothy did not invent the “Poor Boy”; however, Parkway Tavern served all the American Can Company factory workers. After Henry Timothy Sr. retired, his two sons, Jake and Henry Jr., took it over and sold bread to most of the local restaurants in Mid-City New Orleans. When the American Can Company closed in 1988, the Timothys closed the restaurant and sold it to Jay Nix. In 2005 Nix and his family renovated the historic building and opened up the famous Poor Boy Shop to keep its legacy alive. Now, 100-years later, Parkway Tavern is rated as one of the best Poor Boy shops in New Orleans and is a Bayou St. John establishment.
